EXPERIENCED SMALL OWL BANDER (1) needed for fall owl migration banding station in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota, operated by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. Position is 4 weeks, with approximate dates October 1 – October 27, 2019. Primary duties are owl capture and banding, but also include set-up and dismantling of banding station, including clearing net lanes, and erecting and maintaining nets. Must be able to operate 6-10 nets without assistance. Will be working with an intern and will be responsible for some intern training. Responsible for both field and electronic (Excel) data entry. Normal work schedule is Tuesday-Sunday. Housing (shared, with own room) and all equipment provided.
Qualifications
Prior experience and proficiency in mist-netting, safe extraction and proper handling, and efficient banding and processing of small owls. Must be able to identify, age, and sex a variety of owl species captured, primarily, but not limited to, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Eastern Screech-owl, and Long-eared Owl. Experience training inexperienced field staff desired. Ability to effectively communicate to public visitors at the banding station required. Personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and auto insurance required. Hiring contingent on passing a background and driving record check.
