POSITION A Field Biologist - Invasive Species (Research Associate I, Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at US Navy Joint Region Marianas, Guam. ORGANIZATION CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations. To learn more about CEMML’s contributions to land management, our mission, vision, and values, visit RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct baseline survey monitoring of invasive species within the Joint Region Marianas, documenting population vigor and habitat conditions, focused on reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, arthropods, gastropods and weeds. Research, recommend and make establish methods for invasive species eradication and measures to reduce the probability of species becoming established. Use experience and knowledge to establish procedures and strategy for protecting existing habitat and eliminating transfer or threat of invasive species to the Pacific region. Invasive species pose a constant and costly threat and research outcomes have significant implications to ecosystems, biodiversity, economies, climate change adaptation and natural resource conservation. Document findings and prepare field notes. Enter and manage all data within MS Access. Use forms, reports and queries to summarize field data for annual/monthly reports. Create Access forms for all team members to use for data entry. Gather GIS data of survey tracks and polygons of surveyed areas. Use Trimble units and Pathfinder Office software to collect data and transfer to ArcGIS and MS Access. Use ArcGIS to create maps that detail sampling design and results of each sampling site. Communicate, coordinate and participate with other agencies to reach the desired outcome of a better protected region. Develop specific details for action items determined to be warranted and feasible. Develop long-term monitoring protocols and Standard Operating Procedures to minimize spread of invasive species in support of a Regional Biosecurity Plan. Provide rapid response to biosecurity issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS A BS degree in Botany, Biology, Ecology or closely related field. Two years of experience in managing natural resources. Prior experience conducting field work, invasive species management. Must have database management experience within MS Access and competency in ArcGIS. General knowledge of herbicide use, weed control techniques and vegetation monitoring techniques required. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Experience monitoring and controlling browntree snakes and other reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, arthropods, gastropods and weeds. Knowledge of military training and the effects on soils, vegetation, and wildlife. Knowledge of the federal environmental regulations. Experience with GPS and ArcGIS. Understanding of how to leverage VBA in Excel and Access is a plus. Prior experience working on a military installation. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by prior experience documenting field notes. Experience obtaining local and federal permits for field work.
