Description
Woodlands Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust organization. We are seeking a Field Technician to conduct forest restoration activities within 840-acres of forested wetlands within the Greater New Orleans area. This is part of an ongoing effort to reduce non-native invasive vegetation and reforest with native seedlings and trees. The Field Biologist/Land Steward will conduct spot herbicide application to non-native, invasive vegetation within a forested wetland environment, conduct and supervise planting activities, record GPS location of planted trees, maintain planted plots, remove fallen invasive trees, assist with vegetation surveys, summarize treatment data and planting data in a mapping program and other associated activities as needed. Planting activities with volunteers often occur on weekends and thus some weekend work may be required. The work will occur within 840-acres of forested land in the Greater New Orleans area with a start data ASAP. The position pays $17 - $21/hour and is funded for 15-16 months with a possible extension depending on additional project funding.
Qualifications
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, or related disciplines appropriate to the position OR possession of an Applicators License and/or two years of Field experience implementing tasks described in the previous section. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, be able to walk three miles and be able to lift 50 lbs. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in identifying and surveying vegetation, conducting herbicide treatments, utilizing a chainsaw, heavy equipment and GPS devices. Must possess strong organizational skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, self-motivated, attention to detail, punctual, and accountable. The Field Biologist/Land Steward can anticipate days in the field working in adverse conditions (heat, bugs, etc.).
