Description
Mathews & Associates, a natural resources company, has immediate openings for seasonal field biologists to perform wildlife surveys for the Colby Mountain Trails and Upper Butte Creek (UBC) Forest Health Initiative projects. The area is located near the mountain communities of Butte Meadows and Jonesville, CA. The UBC is unique in that data will be collected following the post fire conditions of the 2021 Dixie Fire, which degraded and removed habitat, but retains a mosaic of non-burned areas, intermixed with areas that burned with various intensities. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to the discipline’s emerging awareness of how raptors and carnivores disperse and adapt after unprecedented and historic forest disturbance in the Sierra Nevada.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's Degree in wildlife, ecology or similar field desired. Candidates completing courses towards a degree may also be accepted. Applicants with field experience are necessary and goshawk survey skills are preferred. Knowledge of raptors and the identification of similar species (i.e. sharp-shinned hawks, Cooper’s hawks) are desired. Applicants must have the fitness necessary for hiking in a wide range of physically demanding and challenging outdoor conditions and willing to conduct early morning, daytime or nighttime surveys. Strong orienteering skills utilizing GPS, USGS topographic maps and compass is necessary. Individuals with field vehicles preferred. Travel reimbursement shall be provided for the use of vehicles. Mathews & Associates is an equal opportunity employer.
