Major Duties: Incumbent will serve as a member of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit’s Botany Team and botany field crew. Specific work assignments include plant reconnaissance surveys and plant identification using dichotomous plant keys; rare plant monitoring; invasive plant species (terrestrial) inventory and treatment; data collection using standardized procedures, and use of global positioning systems (GPS) to collect spatial data. Desirable skills include knowledge of plant taxonomy, Sierra Nevada ecology, spatial mapping of plant populations, land-navigation and data entry, and experience with GIS, GPS, and tablets. Additional responsibilities may include manual labor with rare plant restoration (e.g., plantings and fence repair), preparation of project reports, preliminary analysis and classification of information, and public outreach. Work schedule is primarily Monday – Thursday, but some weekend work will be required. Work will be performed under the direction of the Botany Crew Leader. Strong communication, writing skills, and teamwork are desired. Applicants must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license. This is a summer seasonal position from approximately early May to mid-September or longer as funding and work are available. Work Conditions: In addition to working in an office setting, the position requires the ability to hike off-trail through dense forest including steep, exposed terrain while carrying moderately heavy packs sometimes for extended periods of time. Driving 4WD vehicles on mountainous roads in inclement weather conditions will be encountered. Work is performed occasionally in inclement weather conditions (heat, cold, rain and wind) at moderately high altitudes in the presence of wild animals and insects including bees, wasps, and mosquitoes. Government housing is not available. Occasional travel - Position(s) may involve work in remote worksites and may also require overnight travel and/or camping per work assignment.

GS-05: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Participating in plant-related projects using established methods, techniques, and procedures, such as conducted vegetative surveys; identified and recorded locations of sensitive, threatened, endangered and proposed listed plant species; and photographed, collected, and prepared specimen mounts of plants, Participating in field work projects related to vegetation management such as field measurements of density, diversity, etc., experimental layout, seeding or planting, fertilizer or pesticide treatment, Applying simple biological procedures, such as surveyed planted tracts, employed growth deterrents, and inspected for disease or infestation by insects. –OR Successful completion of 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelors degree with at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-05 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above.
