Description
Purpose: The Senior Field Team Leader will provide support and training to field teams as assigned by the Field Team Program Coordinator. Field Teams are engaged in building and repairing trails and other recreational facilities. Members contribute their service, earn AmeriCorps education awards, and receive relevant job experience. The Senior Field Team Leader’s primary role is to provide field support, training, and leadership, monitor a portion of the field teams, and assist with maintaining the vehicle fleet, office operations, and tool and equipment maintenance. Location: The MCC office is located in Augusta; field work is conducted throughout Maine. Time Commitment: • February 20 – December 28, 2018 • 40+ hours a week • Monday-Friday during training and orientation weeks • Four 10-hour days during the field season (standard schedule); overnights and some weekends required; flexibility required to meet the needs of Field Teams Essential Functions: • Have the ability to live and perform strenuous work under challenging conditions • Heavy lifting, bending, and carrying up to 50 pounds • Walking and working across steep or uneven terrain • Working in extremes of heat or cold, as well as being exposed to biting and stinging insects • Working, eating, and camping outdoors in all weather conditions • Ability to hike 3-12 miles per day in rugged terrain, often carrying heavy gear and tools • Have the desire to learn, serve others, and make a difference • Ability to perform tasks as part of a cooperative team • Follow directions • Non-judgmental attitude, sensitivity to others, approachable • Responsible and reliable • Interest in personal growth and in participating in on-going training • Must be able to work independently and be prepared to deal with difficult situations • Ability to teach trail skills Key Responsibilities: • Work to develop MCC projects. Help facilitate and maintain communications and coordination between the MCC office, partners, and teams. • Assist the Coordinator in developing and providing training for Team Leaders and Members before and during the season. • Assist with the recruitment, screening, interview, and selection of Members. • Train members in all aspects of trail construction and rehabilitation. • Assist with maintaining MCC leased vehicles, chainsaws, power equipment, rigging equipment, hand tools, safety gear and camping equipment before, during and after the field season. • Help maintain sign-out system for all equipment and tools. • Help collect, monitor, and report on paperwork & assignment collection from Field Teams including but not limited to evaluating Emergency Response Plans, tracking Work Ready Assignments, and tracking the progress of multiple member surveys. • Co-lead MCC teams with less experienced leaders until they become more competent at their assigned task. • Monitor and provide technical and work place safety support to MCC teams. • Support teams departing for and returning from projects. • Assume leadership role when a Team Leader unexpectedly leaves the program. • Complete all paperwork in a thorough and timely manner, including submission of timesheets and other forms required by the MCC. • Maintain a personal cell phone for communications with the office. • Camp in tents and live cooperatively with members of the team during service sessions and training. • Adhere to the MCC drug free workplace policy. • Represent the MCC and the host site organization in a professional and supportive manner. Training & Skills Needed: • Attend and help teach training, such as: basic orientation to the MCC and AmeriCorps, chainsaw safety, Griphoist and rigging operations, tool use and maintenance, safety standards, conflict resolution, communication, diversity as well as job readiness lessons on career interests, resumes, cover letters, and interview skills. • Attend and help teach trail skills, such as rigging, stone and timber construction; crew management; instruction and experience with leadership; Leave No Trace, First Aid and CPR Benefits: • Stipend of $540-$575 per week based on number of years as STL (less taxes) • Health Insurance • State Park Pass • Pro deals Working Conditions: This position requires serving in adverse weather conditions, including cold, rain, hot, and humidity, exposure to biting and stinging insects, hiking with all tools and gear over difficult terrain, and sleeping in tents. This position should be viewed not as a traditional job, but as an experience where long hours and extended time away from home, often in remote locations, are to be expected. Qualifications
Qualifications: • High School diploma or equivalent • Must be at least 21 years old • Must be a US Citizen • Must submit to criminal history check • Must be approved to drive State vehicles by the Risk Management Division • Two seasons of trail work experience in leadership role with an AmeriCorps and/or Conservation Corps program • Previous experience with construction work Desired Functions: • Knowledge of trail layout and design • Ability to assess trails and provide estimates for trail maintenance and construction projects • Excellent communication skills • Strong organizational skills • Excellent work ethic • Possesses motivation and initiative
