Description
Job Title: Field Supervisor (Supervisor) Reports To: Restoration Crew Manager (Manager) FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full Time, Temporary (through March 31, 2023, with potential to renew based on funding) Regular Workweek: Tuesday – Saturday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm Roles: Under the San Diego Canyonlands Restoration Program, this position oversees the Fire Fuels Reduction Crew, conducting vegetation removal in the Brush Management Zone (BMZ) within the urban canyons in the San Diego River watershed. Supervisor ensures high levels of communication with the Manager via reporting of progress, challenges, significant employee issues, injuries, and worker performance evaluations. Scope: schedules work assignments with the Manger; oversees field activities and grant performance milestones under the direction of the Manager; communicates daily/weekly work activities and schedule updates to all assigned field technicians; assures through training/supervision that field crews maintain appropriate/safe work behaviors, including well maintained/safe work sites; maintains SDCL equipment, truck(s), and materials storage/staging areas in good working order at all times; utilizes GPS skills including tablets for gathering and mapping work progress; reports each day’s process through online reporting tools; and performs miscellaneous duties as required by the Manager. The urban canyon restoration activities include but are not limited to: weeding, planting, watering, trail building/maintenance, complete removal and proper herbicide treatments of non-native vegetation, fence/stairs/bridge building/repairs, erosion control features, trash/debris removal, graffiti abatement, and scheduled maintenance. Workdays are Tuesday through Saturday. Volunteer events may occur on Saturdays involving working with canyon ‘Friends’, partner organizations, and other volunteer groups. In these events, the Supervisor serves as SDCL liaison representing our organization with the highest standards of professionalism in public communications. Compensation: Hourly rate is $23.00 per hour, working 40 hours per week. Benefits include 80 hours of paid time off, 12 paid holidays, and 40 hours of sick time. Qualifications
Required Qualifications: two or more years of education and/or work experience in environmental or habitat restoration services; experience supervising field crews; valid California Driver’s License and clean driving record; excellent communication skills; willingness and self-initiative to communicate with partners (Rangers, neighbors, and Friends Group leaders) and volunteers professionally; competency with power and hand tool usage and associated safety practices; and must be able to conduct physically rigorous field work including standing/hiking for multiple hours at a time, and carrying up to 50 pounds. Demonstrated teamwork skills such as getting along well with others, respecting others’ physical abilities and contributions, and helping/offering assistance to co-workers at all times. Understanding of and dedication to hydration and tool safety protocols; ability to identify and consider creative, practical ideas to improve work efficiencies (i.e., adaptive management, problem-solving, and “thinking on your feet”); willingness to learn about non-native and native plants; and willingness to be trained to safely and effectively apply herbicides as needed for habitat restoration activities. Live Scan background check is required for this position. Preferred Qualifications: knowledge of San Diego natural resources; knowledge of urban canyon ecosystems; herbicide application experience; knowledge of GPS/GIS; and dispute resolution skills.
