- Description
- The Cooperative Wildlife Research Lab at Southern Illinois University is hiring 2 experienced field technicians for a project investigating habitat use of wildlife in giant cane habitat in southern Illinois during April (or May)-September (or August). Technicians will gain a wide range of field experience involving habitat measurement and non-invasive survey techniques for mammals, herps, and birds. Field duties will include scouting for giant cane habitats, contacting private landowners, conducting forest plot surveys, conducting area searches for herpetofauna, setting camera traps, small mammal track stations, and acoustic recording units. Office-related duties will include data entry and identifying wildlife species from camera traps, track plates, and acoustic recording units (i.e., bird calls and frog calls). Salary is $13/hour. Housing is not included, but local rental options are plentiful.
- Qualifications
- To be considered for this position, applicants must have appropriate field experience, and have or be working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Management, Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or a related field. Applicants that have experience with bird calls in the Midwest is preferred. Both Candidates must also have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, a strong work ethic, be comfortable contacting private landowners and communicating with the public, be able to work both independently and in team settings, and be comfortable with working long, irregular hours in rugged field conditions with hot/humid summer weather with ample insects and poison ivy.
