Description
The Yellowstone Ecological Research Center (YERC) in Bozeman, MT, is hiring field techs to work on our RiverNET community science water monitoring program this spring and/or summer (2019). Two positions will start in March and run through June, doing groundwork to establish 20 new stream gauge sites on tributaries of the Yellowstone River between Gardiner, MT, and Big Timber, MT. Duties include selecting appropriate stream gauge sites, operating laser range finding equipment, recording stream depth and velocity measurements, installing stream gauge staffs and/or sensors, data management, equipment maintenance, public relations in rural communities, and safe decision-making. Two additional positions will start in May and run through September, continuing our water quality monitoring program between Gardiner, MT, and Livingston, MT, that began last summer (check out this article from the Livingston Enterprise to learn more: https://www.livingstonenterprise.com/content/rivernet). Duties include collecting water samples, basic lab work analyzing those samples, in-stream sensor maintenance, data management, equipment maintenance, public relations in rural communities, and safe decision-making. These positions could be hired as separate crews, or could be rolled together for the duration of the season, depending on job candidate availability. Compensation includes a $900/month tax-free stipend, housing near Emigrant, MT, and the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience working on cutting-edge conservation in a beautiful setting near Yellowstone National Park.
Qualifications
Qualified applicants will typically have a B.S. in a natural science field. They should also have a very strong field work background, experience with data entry and management, and excellent teamwork skills (work days are long, and shared employee housing is in close quarters). Preference will be given to applicants who have experience working in swift water environments, and who have safety certifications (e.g., CPR, WFR, swift water rescue, etc.). To apply, please send a COVER LETTER detailing (a) which position(s) you are interested in, (b) your qualifications specific to the duties and requirements listed in this announcement, and (c) your time availability, as well as a RESUME and THREE REFERENCES. Applications and questions may be sent to Patrick Cross (cross@yellowstoneresearch.org).
