Description
The Yellowstone Ecological Research Center is hiring our field crew for the summer 2018 season.  Duties will include: (1) Installing water monitoring sensors along the Yellowstone River between Gardiner and Livingston, Montana, (2) Collecting water samples and performing other water quality assessments along that river corridor, (3) Collecting core samples and performing plot assessments at aspen stands across Yellowstone National Park as part of a long-term browsing monitoring project, (4) Recording a tree species and height dataset in Yellowstone to validate a remote sensing-based model, and (5) Field station maintenance in Cooke City, Montana, among other tasks. A crew leader position ($1000/month) will run from May 1 - Sept. 1, and a crew member position ($800/month) will run from June 1 - Sept. 1. Stipends are tax-free, and housing is provided.
Qualifications
Candidates must be able to: (1) Cheerfully work long days in a backcountry setting under any and all weather conditions. (2) Work well with team members, both in the field and in shared housing.  (3) Be responsible for time management, making sure that objectives are completed by the end of the season. (3) Conscientiously follow all data collection and safety protocols, recognizing that the last line of data entry is just as important as the first. (4) Communicate with supervisors at the office headquarters, including any questions, problems, issues, etc. (5) Positively represent our organization to Park officials, visitors, and local residents. (6) Make good decisions in the field, prioritizing crew safety over project objectives. Field work in Yellowstone National Park will include wildlife and exposure hazards, while field work along the Yellowstone River will include swiftwater hazards. Preferred candidates will have a degree in biology, ecology, forestry, or a related natural science field; safety certifications (e.g., CPR, WFR); and relevant experience.
