Fire Science Applications is seeking a field technician to start in January 2023 (start date flexible). This position is considered full-time term (6 months) with the possibility of extension. The position will be located at Tall Timbers Research Station in Tallahassee, FL with the opportunity for field work to take place across the Southeast. The field technician will be part of a small team that provides tools to help fire managers make confident decisions while burning. Position Responsibilities: Support fire science research in projects including but not limited to ecological forestry, LiDAR acquisition, FLIR data, and fuel drying. • Basic LiDAR analysis • Create maps using ArcGIS • Collect estimates of understory growth and tree growth • Eddy-flux system maintenance including data downloading, trouble-shooting, quality assurance, and tower safety • Lab/vehicle/equipment maintenance • Field maintenance Develop background research knowledge and skills required to carry out research and use and maintain data collection equipment. • Familiarize with all literature to date relating to fire research • Learn to use and maintain complex research and data collection equipment • Practice safe field and lab techniques in data collection and recording • Assist in prescribed fires as needed Compensation/Benefits: Technicians receive a starting wage of $15.00/hr. Subsidized housing is available upon request at a rate of $150/mo.
