- Make a Difference in Oregon's Natural Resources! Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations. This permanent position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Central Point, Oregon. Help keep Oregon safe from aquatic invasive species! Inspect watercrafts at key locations located around the state. If you enjoy the outdoors, Oregon is the place for you. We have glaciated mountain peaks, the Snake River and Hells Canyon to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the massive Columbia River Gorge to the north. You can fish 365 days a year, and there is hunting for big game, waterfowl and game birds. To learn more about the department, the work we do, and see our beautiful state, view the following video at https://youtu.be/8CjDPiPMGAk What you will do: • Inspect watercrafts entering Oregon at designated locations throughout the state for quagga and zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species. Follow established protocols for inspection and decontamination of affected watercrafts. Interview watercraft owners or transporters to evaluate risk based on boating history. • Use watercraft inspections as an education and outreach opportunity to inform members of the public about aquatic invasive species and their ecological and economic impacts. • Participate in outreach and education efforts to inform the general public about the impacts of aquatic invasive species on Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats. Disseminate information about aquatic invasive species and proper ways to clean or decontaminate watercraft at various public venues. • Submit weekly summaries of watercraft inspections to the Invasive Species, Wildlife Integrity Supervisor. Record inspection data on paper forms or a tablet. Enter inspection forms into an online database. • Occasionally coordinate with Oregon State Police, Oregon State Marine Board, county law enforcement, and other department staff to isolate any watercraft contaminated with quagga or zebra mussels or other aquatic invasive species. Working Conditions • Requires working in inclement weather. • Requires great attention to detail when inspecting and decontaminating watercrafts. • Requires use of a computer. • This position requires working weekends and holidays. • Must be persuasive and diplomatic when dealing with the general public and sometimes upset individuals. • This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. If the selected applicant does not possess a card, they must obtain it before completion of the trial service period as a condition of continued employment. • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Criminal Records/DMV Check Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. - Qualifications
- We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience: Minimum Qualifications: • An Associate's degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR • Eighteen months of experience in fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. A higher level degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree. Requested Skills: • Experience performing watercraft inspections • Experience participating in outreach and education efforts to inform the general public about the impacts of aquatic invasive species on Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats • Ability to identify fish, mussels and aquatic plants • A working knowledge of aquatic invasive species • Performing minor maintenance on equipment • Using a computer database to enter data
