Description
Medvejie Hatchery has an opening for a Fish Culturist. This is a full-time benefited position. This position works with the manager, assistant manager, and other culturists to help operate and maintain the hatchery. Benefits include paid holiday and sick time, annual vacation accrual, health insurance (including dental), and an employer contributed 401(A) retirement program after an initial vesting period. Medvejie Hatchery is located 10 miles southeast of Sitka in Bear Cove. It is a semi-remote facility accessed by a gated road that serves one of the city’s two hydropower plants. The opportunities for outdoor recreation are abundant. Medvejie Hatchery is one of the largest Chinook salmon hatcheries in the state, incubating and rearing over 3 million chinook smolts, 75 million chum salmon fry and 200,000 coho smolts as a broodstock source for the 2 million coho smolt program at Sawmill Creek Hatchery. At times this position will be required to supervise temporary seasonal employees. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate good communication skills and have the ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently. All permanent employees are expected to actively participate in facility development and management and have a high standard of quality, along with a strong work ethic.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: • BS in fisheries or biology and/or a two-year Associates Degree in aquaculture or related field or some aquaculture field experience. • Some experience supervising other personnel • Demonstrated experience handling boats, work floats, and a good working knowledge of knots and rigging • Physically fit, able to carry 50 pounds over a distance of 100 yards. • Current valid driver's license • Dive certification is not necessary but would be an asset Areas of responsibility will include (but not be limited to): • Assisting with all aspects of pacific salmon culture • Operating hatchery equipment such as: forklifts, front-end loaders, chainsaws, power tools, brush-cutters, snowblowers, eggsorters, fish counters, fish pumps, and other associated equipment. • Assist in maintaining hatchery records • Assist in monitoring and recording various environmental data • Develop knowledge of hatchery water systems which includes an understanding of the water collection processes, valve systems, water routings, and associated emergency procedures. • Develop a thorough knowledge of the Medvejie Hatchery programs
