- This position will be split between the Fisheries and Wildlife Divisions and based at the Miles City Fish Hatchery. The hatchery has a history of conflicts with fish-eating birds that are having a significant impact on the hatchery’s ability raise enough fish to meet objectives. There is a need for an intern to work collaboratively with the hatchery and wildlife staff to develop and implement strategies to minimize the impacts of birds fishing at the Miles City Hatchery. To the extent possible, the intern duties will be split 50% conflict minimization activities, 50% assisting with hatchery operations. The balance between duties will shift across the season and depend on bird activity. Conflict minimization tasks will include setting up infrastructure to exclude birds, implementing diverse hazing techniques, generating new ideas, documenting bird behavior and the effectiveness of strategies, updating a draft strategy, and preparing a final report. Day to day hatchery operations will include rearing, feeding, pond draining, fish enumeration, sampling, stocking, grounds keeping. This is a warm water hatchery that raises Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Channel Catfish, Bluegill, Tiger Muskie, Fathead Minnow, Yellow Perch and Pallid Sturgeon.
- Qualifications
- SKILLS, ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE NEEDED (EDUCATION; UNDERGRAD/GRAD LEVEL, SUGGESTED/REQUIRED MAJORS): Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited university or college program. This includes all public, private, community, vo-tech, and Native American institutions of higher learning. Preference will be given to those individuals enrolled in a program with fisheries, aquaculture, wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, zoology, or a closely related field. Fisheries or wildlife experience is not a requirement, but preference will be given to applicants with prior experience with hatcheries or fisheries/wildlife fieldwork that included data collection and entry. Applicants must have the ability to learn and retain new field skills quickly. Preference will be given to applicants with genuine enthusiasm, interest in learning new techniques, and those working toward a career in wildlife biology or a related field. Applicants should be able to follow oral and written directions accurately, be organized, work well independently and with hatchery staff and biologists. Applicants must be physically fit and able to work long days and complete strenuous tasks at the hatchery. Field conditions will include adverse weather, biting insects, and long hours. Applicants with a demonstrated ability to handle these types of conditions will be given preference. Applicants must hold a valid driver’s license.
