The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire a contract Fisheries Biologist to coordinate and supervise the first season of a 2-season project surveying small bodied, native fishes in the Bighorn River in northwest Wyoming. The biologist will be responsible for planning and implementing the project, supervising a technician, analyzing data, and writing a final report. This is a contract position funded from March 15, 2023 to October 15, 2023, with extension possible for a second season (starting March 2024). This field position will require operation of trucks, trailers, and jet boats in a river system. This position will be based out of Cody, Wyoming.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.
Maintain a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and be able to work well with others in a team setting.
Work well with the public and private landowners and represent the WGFD in professional manner.
Lead a crew of 1 technician to survey for small bodied, native fishes in the Bighorn River.
Safely operate and maintain a jet boat in a river system
Write interim and project completion reports to summarize results and provide management recommendations.
Make purchases for the project, file appropriate paperwork, and manage the project budget.
Preference will be given to those with a degree in fisheries management, ecology, ichthyology, biology, natural resources management, or another closely related field, AND one or more years of applicable field experience.
**Must have a valid driver's license.
Experience with fish identification.
Experience with trawls and netting in riverine systems.
Safe operation of backpack electrofishing equipment.
Ability to safely operate and troubleshoot motorized watercraft.
Ability to work in the field in remote areas.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to perform field work under adverse weather conditions.
Overnight travel will be required.
Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check before appointment.
Lodging, waders, rain gear, uniform, and all other necessary field equipment and expenses will be provided when in the field. Off duty housing is not provided.
