Position Title: Fisheries Research Technician (multiple openings) Location: Darien, GA and Apalachicola, FL. Dates: May 4 through approximately November 20, 2018. Potential opportunity to start in April. Also looking for May-August technicians. Close Date: February 28, 2018 (applications will be considered as they arrive). Interviews will be conducted in March. Description: The Peterson Lab at UGA is conducting research on several marine and anadromous fishes in coastal Georgia and Apalachicola, FL. Ongoing projects in 2018 include collection of life history and habitat use data for Atlantic, Shortnose, and Gulf Sturgeons and collection of Gag Grouper telemetry data. Responsibilities: Technician responsibilities will include the operation and trailering of small (17-24’) boats in coastal and potentially offshore environments, fish sampling with nets and lines, maintenance of acoustic receiver arrays, and data entry. During the fall, technicians will take shifts in round-the-clock fish surveys. Technicians will also be responsible for gear maintenance, including mending nets and minor boat and trailer repairs. There may be opportunities for scientific SCUBA diving. Technicians work an average of 40 hours per week (although some days or weeks may be very long), but generally have weekends off. Applicants must be able to tolerate a variety of inclement field conditions including hot/cold weather, biting insects, and occasional rough water conditions.
Qualifications: Interest in fisheries. Experience with gill nets, safe trailer and boat operation, and mechanical repair is highly desirable, but on the job training will be provided. SCUBA certification (especially AAUS and nitrox certifications) is a bonus. Must be able to work well in a small group and share living space with the team.
