About the position:
The Department is seeking a temporary Fisheries Technician to work out of Coeur d’Alene, assisting with the Lake Pend Oreille Recovery Project Predator Suppression Program.
Position Available/Dates Needed:
One five month non-benefited technician -Approximately August 28th, 2017 through January 26th, 2017, with possibility of 3 month extension and potential for rehire, depending on funding and program objectives.
Applicants must, with or without reasonable accommodations, work in inclement weather for long periods of time, handle live and dead fish, hike long distances in rough terrain while carrying up to 50 lbs., stand/work in cold water for long periods of time, and lift/carry up to 60 lbs. Schedule will typically be 40 hrs/week (Monday–Friday), but work schedules may vary. Some weekend or holiday work may be required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Incumbent’s primary duties will be working daily aboard a commercial fishing vessel on Lake Pend Oreille helping commercial fisherman with gill net and trap net surveys for various native, non-native, and threatened fish species. Incumbent will manage associated sampling data and equipment, and utilize common fish sampling and marking techniques. Incumbent will be expected to perform periodic data summaries and may also be expected to assist with laboratory analyses and sample preparations.
It is preferred that applicants have (or are currently making progress towards obtaining) a B.S. degree in fisheries management, ecology, or related field; or equivalent in training and experience. The ability to maintain a positive attitude and uncompromised work ethic through uncomfortable conditions is very important. Experience collecting and managing scientific data is preferred. Applicants must be able to work independently under little to no supervision. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.
