Description
This is a mid-level Fisheries Technician position with the Native Village of Eyak (NVE) Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducting population monitoring and research on adult Chinook salmon and Sockeye salmon on the Copper River, Alaska. Responsibilities include 1) data collection following established protocols (e.g. safely handling large adult salmon, tagging, telemetry, operation of capture fishwheels, use of multibeam acoustic sonar, operation of inclined plane traps), and 2.) safely working and living cohesively with a small group of people for an extended period of time at an isolated remote field site. The applicant must have a working knowledge of The Scientific Method, with an emphasis on techniques for research and analysis. The applicant should also have extensive experience with boat operation, power and hand tool operation, as well as the ability to thrive in the wilderness. The majority of work occurs outdoors in inclement weather, travel, fieldwork, daily boat operation, and remote living for the duration of the field season is required (up to 8 positions available). Successful applicants will be stationed at one of three well-established and appointed remote fisheries research sites (Klutina River, or Copper River at Wood Canyon or Baird Canyon). Training begins in Cordova on 24 April, season duration is dependent upon camp placement but ranges from 15-July - 15 August. All food and lodging is provided.
