This is an 11 month position as an AmeriCorps member at St. Lucie Inlet and Seabranch Preserve State Parks in Stuart, Florida. During your 11 month term of service you will learn, train and conduct a wide variety of resource management techniques. The main focus is on exotic plant removal. A large part of time will be spent in the state parks conducting exotic plant removal. Participation on prescribed fires is also a major part of this position. Other position duties include: tracking/mapping using GIS software and handheld GPS units, conducting education and outreach events including leading guided tours, assisting in vegetation/photo monitoring, trail maintenance, reef fish surveys, native plantings and other related resource management activities.
Ability to work in a variety of environments and conditions, including hot/humid buggy conditions. Ability to pass a moderate pack test for prescribed fires. Must be able to carry a 25 pound pack in 2 miles in 30 minutes or less. A strong desire to work outside conducting resource management activities. Ability to closely follow direction and work well with others including interactions with park visitors. Preferred educational background in environmental or biological sciences. Preferred experience working outdoors, conducting resource management and prescribed fire experience.
