NWTF Forester - Arkansas The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is seeking qualified candidates for a forester position working out of a NRCS office in Lonoke, Arkansas. This is a cooperative position with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and will be responsible for implementing and promoting forest management on private lands in the Mississippi Delta Region of Arkansas. This is a full-time, term limited (minimum of three-years) position. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Monitor, evaluate, and plan conservation activities on Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) - Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) and Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) easements, provide technical assistance to private landowners regarding timber management on re-forested hardwood plantations, identify additional management needs on ACEP-WRE/WRP easements, and assist partners with outreach efforts regarding bottomland hardwood management. DUTIES: • Evaluate current status of WRE/WRP plantings to determine management need • Complete status checks and practice certifications to ensure landowner compliance • Provide technical assistance to private landowners to include timber harvest recommendations and oversight • Work with landowners to implement habitat management practices in order to create/manage early successional habitat • Explore additional funding opportunities in order to leverage NRCS dollars • Utilize tools developed by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to identify overstocked stands • Identify opportunities to increase partnership between public and private landowners • Create and submit quarterly/annual reports to highlight partnership accomplishments KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Preferred candidates will possess experience working in bottomland hardwood ecosystems and knowledge of wild turkeys, forest wildlife and their habitat requirements, to include T&E species; knowledge of forest management and planning for major silvicultural types of the region; experience with and understanding of the Farm Bill and its programs; knowledge of basic surveying principles, map reading and GIS/GPS technology, ArcGIS skills; ability to apply professional scientific techniques to the land for which responsibilities are assigned; ability to effectively cooperate with private landowners, the general public, cooperators and peers; skills in communicating both orally and in written form to convey clear, persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others; proficient skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications QUALIFICATIONS: • Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from a SAF accredited program • Strong organizational skills, networking, communication (ex., verbal, presentation, inter-personal, writing), project management, and leadership ability is preferred • Experience working with private landowners as well as Federal / State agencies (ex. NRCS, AGFC, USFWS, FSA) with working knowledge of cost-share programs, such as EQIP (NRCS) • Experience with forestry and silviculture, conservation implementation, habitat management, and wildlife biology is desired • Able to work in a wide range of field conditions often requiring rigorous physical activity • Capability to work independently with little direct supervision • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, produce effective results, and meet deadlines; applicant must be self-motivated, responsible and have ability to solve problems Salary is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
