Based in Modoc County, CA Under supervision, these positions will perform a variety of tasks with local partners in Modoc County, California. Technicians will assist in completing monitoring and marking of timber sales. Technicians will work independently and as part of a team to select and mark individual trees using industry guidelines, silviculture prescriptions and supervisor training. Assistants will also complete a variety of duties associated with talking to stakeholders and interacting with collaborating agencies. This position will be expected to perform other duties related to resource management, as needed. The ability to work in remote, harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and interact well with a variety of people is required. We are flexible with three to six month positions available with flexible starting about May 9, 2022. Responsibilities • Identifying and marking trees for sale according to guidelines and silviculture prescription • Tally and record forest density parameters under the supervision of a qualified timber cruiser • Identification of sensitive, threatened and endangered species and areas of archeological significance • Participate in other areas of resource management as needed such as recreation and tree planting Job Details • Position is based on an approximately 40 hour week with irregular work hours and schedule • Position ideal for recently graduated or current students, we are willing to train candidates • Three to six month position options with flexible starting date after May 9, 2022 • This is an hourly paid internship ($15-17 per hour based on experience) • Shared housing may be available for about $250/month • Check out for our current newsletter or for blogs from last year’s technicians
Job Requirements and Preferences • Experience or interest in forestry, wildlife, botany, hydrology, geology, and/or rangeland management • Experience outdoors collecting data or other agricultural experience • Experience using field guides or training manuals • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher) • Excellent organizational skills • Ability to work productively and communicate as part of a team, as well as independently under general direction to accomplish team goals • Ability to read, interpret and navigate using topographic maps in remote settings and collect coordinates with hand-held GPS units • Valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record and experience operating 4WD vehicles and ATVs on paved and unpaved roads, often in narrow or rocky areas, minimum 18 years old
