Description
Compensation: $25-40/hour with unlimited overtime. Employees will be expected to work at least 50 hours/wk. Location: Black Hills National Forest, South Dakota. Housing: Provided at a location 8 miles west of Custer. The project area is ~4-20 miles away from the housing location. Applicants will be paid for time spent driving to/from the project area from the rental housing. Timeframe: March-late April. Hiring will begin immediately. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Project details: Project involves marking a 1795 acre timber sale on the Hell Canyon District. Forest is predominantly open-understory ponderosa pine. Multiple prescriptions will be implemented on this sale, including commercial thins, seed cuts, pine encroachment, and others. The successful applicant will walk the sale area and mark trees to be left using a backpack sprayer, according to the prescriptions. Applicant will be required to identify acceptable trees to leave, under direction from the lead forester. Work will continue in all weather, including rain and snow. This has been a heavy snow year, so work is currently progressing through snow depths of 1-2 feet on north-facing slopes. After a few days of work, paint sprayback covers clothing, so it’s important the applicant wear acceptable clothing that can be covered in a layer of orange paint. Applicant will be required to hike across steep slopes. The applicant will be hired as a short-term 1099 subcontractor. Applicant must possess their own high-clearance AWD/4WD vehicle, and be willing to transport themself to/from the project area from the rental housing, a distance of 4-20 miles, depending on which unit is being worked in. This is an opportunity to learn silvicultural practices and how timber harvests can help achieve management goals. About the company: Clearwater Forest Analytics is a small firm engaged in forestry-related projects across the US. Current projects include timber sale marking and forest inventory and analysis (FIA) plot measurement. Past work areas have included Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Michigan.
