Description
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the US Forest Service (USFS) Pacific Southwest Region, is recruiting Forestry Crew Members to work cooperatively with USFS and GBI staff to perform vegetation management and restoration projects within forest/woodland areas. This work provides professional development opportunities while supporting USFS initiatives for healthy and productive forest landscapes and resources. Duties will include performing standard timber cruising, and assisting in stand exam data collection. Data are gathered using standard instruments, direct measurements, observations, and on-site inspections. Forestry Crew Members will also mark trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines and silvicultural prescriptions. Training will be provided on tree-species identification, GPS data collection, tree marking, and other project-specific tasks. Two five-person forestry crews (one crew lead and four crew members per crew), one crew in the north and the other crew in the southern part of the forest, will perform this work in collaboration with USFS. Camping at a work site for several days may be required to meet project objectives. Location: Work will take place on the Eldorado National Forest (near Placerville, CA). Located in the central Sierra Nevada, the Eldorado NF is bordered on the east by the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Humboldt-Toiyabe NF, and by the Tahoe and Stanislaus NFs to the north and south, respectively. Recreational and sight-seeing opportunities abound in the region. Compensation: Living allowance: $10,861.40 (disbursed biweekly) Education award: $2,255 Per Diem: $15/day (if camping) Paid health insurance Housing may be provided (at a reasonable rate) Timeline: North Zone: 5-month appointment beginning 15 April 2019 South Zone: 4-month appointment beginning 15 April 2019 Full time, 40 hours/week
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Botany or other related natural science field, with coursework and experience that demonstrate understanding of the principles of forestry and their application; Knowledge of the mixed conifer forests typical of eastern California, including common plants (woody and herbaceous), wildlife, and/or geology/topography, preferred; Experience with timber cruising and standard forestry mensuration, survey, and inventory protocols; Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resource staff; Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience; Ability to navigate and collect data using handheld GPS units; Proficiency using a compass and topographic map to navigate; Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads; Ability to live and work in rural and remote field and office setting; Physically fit to work outdoors, carry up to 50 pounds of personal and/or field equipment, and withstand the rigors of a forested and/or high desert environment in all seasons; Willingness and ability to camp in remote, primitive sites for several consecutive days; Familiarity with best practices for field safety and Leave No Trace principles; Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals and objectives of the USFS.
