The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) seeks motivated individuals to participate in a 12-week freshwater fisheries management summer internship in the state. These internships are designed to give real-world experience in the freshwater fisheries field. The intern will assist SCDNR Freshwater Fisheries technicians and biologists with typical field duties. These duties likely will include, but are not limited to, electrofishing, gillnetting, fish propagation, fish stocking, creel surveys, fish passage assessment, habitat improvements, river and stream sampling, fish aging (otoliths), telemetry, hydroacoustics, water quality monitoring, outreach, boat and trailer maintenance. Not all tasks will be performed at every location.
To apply, go to: http://www.dnr.sc.gov/admin/internshipsFF.html and download the application. Submit the application, a resume and transcripts (unofficial copies are allowed) to the address on the application.
Applicants must be working toward a degree in fisheries management or closely related field. Recently graduated individuals seeking field experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to clearly and effectively communicate and work independently with little supervision.
Work often will be at remote sites and in harsh conditions. Additionally, knowledge of fisheries biology and management practices is helpful.
