- FUELS MITIGATION SPECIALIST -- Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative Compensation: $19-24 per hour Location: Upper Arkansas River Basin Counties Position will primarily work from home with some travel Job Type: Full Time Closing: Open until filled, posted March 10th, 2023 Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative (ARWC): The mission of the Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative is to aid Arkansas Basin communities to address locally identified watershed issues for economic, ecological, and social benefit. With recent large-scale wildfires within the Arkansas River Basin, ARWC has worked closely with communities on fire mitigation and fire & flood recovery efforts. Our forests are our watersheds, and together with our partners, we will continue to help communities prepare and respond to fire and flood. Job Description: The Mitigation Specialist assists with Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative wildfire risk reduction/mitigation/fire & flood recovery programs within the Arkansas River Basin. The Mitigation Specialist will work primarily in the Upper Arkansas Basin with a focus on Lake County, and as needed in other parts of our work area. Some overnight travel will be required. The position works under the direction of the Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative’s Director of Forestry. The Mitigation Specialist will work with agency and community partners to complete fuels mitigation projects, coordinate on-the-ground program and project implementation, and provide mentoring and training; this is an excellent opportunity to gain project management experience. This position requires flexibility to fill various roles and responsibilities and a willingness to learn and develop new skill sets. We hope to find an engaged and versatile candidate for this unique position to serve the Upper Arkansas Basin communities. Preference is given to candidates residing in Lake County, or willing to relocate within six months. Core Responsibilities: The incumbent should have professional knowledge and ability with some or all of the following tasks. Additional training and mentorship will be provided. Education & Outreach: Work with communities to develop effective, diverse, and sustainable mitigation programs. Wildfire Planning: Develop planning products to help communities and fire protection districts understand wildfire risk and prioritize risk reduction actions. Fuels Reduction, Mitigation & Community Chipping Projects: Fuels Mitigation Specialist will aid Lake County in the rollout of Fuels Reduction & Slash Management programs. Monitoring and Evaluation: Responsible for programmatic data collection for reporting to funding organizations. Desired Attributes: ❖ Understanding of fuels management, best practices, and defensible space. ❖ Proficiency in the use and maintenance of mitigation tools. ❖ Independent, self-motivated, and able to work remotely with limited supervision. ❖ Attention to personal relationships, partnership development, and retention. ❖ Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking. ❖ Project management experience. ❖ Strong leadership skills. ❖ Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and activities. ❖ Close attention to detail and organization. ❖ Willingness to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays. ❖ Willingness to travel locally and regionally. ❖ Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite of applications. ❖ Proficiency with GPS and data collection apps (ArcGIS Collector, Survey123, etc.) Qualifications: 1. A minimum of 2 years of experience in wildfire mitigation or forestry-related programs. A college degree in forestry or a related field is preferred but not required. 2. Chainsaw training (s-212 or equivalent) 3. Experience with volunteer management and team leadership. Compensation and Benefits: The position is full-time, with an average of 40 hours/week. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience. There is a 6-month probationary period, and upon successful completion of this period, the employee is eligible for full benefits. Some relocation expenses available to the right candidate to move to Lake County. While performing the duties of this job, the team member is required to stand, sit, walk, talk, or hear for extended periods. Occasionally lifts and carries 50 lbs. at least 100 ft. Frequently walks over uneven, rough terrain, carries necessary job equipment. Often sits in one position while driving.
