Essential Functions Primarily Reports to: Wildlife Veterinarian Secondarily provides support to: Statewide Game Management Staff General Job Duties -Assist with maintaining NDGFD Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL) facility and equipment -Provide technical support for field retrieval of carcasses -Intake and processing of samples and carcasses from field personnel -Maintenance of WHL, Furbearer, Big Game and Health Databases. -Train new seasonal WHL technicians as needed -Provide Technical Support to other Game Management Staff including - Big Game Biologist(s) - Furbearer Biologist - Upland Game Biologist(s) - Migratory Game Bird Biologist(s) -Communicate with varying stakeholders -Other duties as assigned Program Specific Duties: Wildlife Health Assist with wildlife health assessment necropsies; Carcass retrieval from the field; Assist with planning, organizing, and carrying out disease surveillance projects; Communicate with public; Organize and submit samples to appropriate labs for testing; Data entry, organization, and management Big Game Submit biological samples to appropriate testing labs; Assist with field projects as needed; Collect and process big game biological samples; Data entry, organization, and management Furbearer Assist with field projects as needed; Assist with necropsies and biological sample collection from furbearer species; Data entry, organization, and management Upland Game Assist with seasonal upland game surveys; Assist with processing hunter harvested biological samples; Data entry, organization, and management as needed Waterfowl Provide assistance on projects as needed Potential Additional Training after employment -Basic disease and pathology training -Disease-specific diagnostic training -Fur trapping and handling training -Training in proper use of program specific data analysis software and databases -Chemical immobilization training -Safety training: CPR, First Aid, ATV Safety, Boat & Watercraft Safety -Commercial Driver’s License Training – Needed to haul Mobile Lab Unit, Mobile Refrigeration Unit and Wildlife Health dump bed trailer -Training on safe use of heavy equipment at Bismarck Shop Facility Other projects and duties that have been assigned in the past have included but were not limited to: -Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Surveillance -Avian Influenza Surveillance -CWD Surveillance -Bovine TB Surveillance -Enforcement Necropsies -Rabies Surveillance -Coyote TB Surveillance -Aging and Sexing Fall Hunter Harvested Turkey Wings -Goose and Duck Banding -Big Game Aerial Surveys -Bighorn sheep translocations -Sage-grouse translocations -Assistance with surgical implantation of transmitters in ducks.
Qualifications
Requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology or management or closely related natural resource science degree. Other 4 year science related degrees will be considered if the applicant has at least 2 years’ experience with wildlife field work. Graduating undergraduates with experience will be considered. Must have or be able to obtain a Class D North Dakota driver’s license. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be willing to travel extensively.
