- George Benz Aquatic Ecology Fellow Thank you for your interest in the summer George Benz Aquatic Ecology Fellowship at the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute! Dr. George W. Benz was the first Chief Research Scientist of the Tennessee Aquarium and founder of the research institute that became the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute. In a career that spanned both coasts, Dr. Benz’s research interests were as large as his personality: from parasitology and evolutionary relationships of copepods to fisheries biology and southeastern freshwater conservation. One of his longest-lasting contributions to the field, however, was his devotion to teaching and mentoring. He was known for finding and encouraging future biologists with a deep belief in the importance of fieldwork in shaping their research endeavors. As part of your fellowship, you will develop and conduct independent research to support ongoing projects at the Conservation Institute, including community ecology, ecotoxicology, and the conservation status of southeastern fishes. You will also assist with fieldwork and lab analyses conducted by Conservation Institute science staff. Key Responsibilities 1. Conduct independent research in southeastern aquatic conservation biology. 2. Prepare a scientific presentation to be presented to the Aquarium staff at the end of summer. 3. Assist with the propagation of Lake Sturgeon, Brook Trout, and other live animals as needed. 4. Interact with Conservation Institute science staff to support ongoing research projects. 5. Assist with education and conservation science outreach programs. 6. Assist with lab and field work as needed. 7. Other duties as assigned. Seasonal, hourly; 40 hours/week from May 15 to July 28, 2023 (limited flexibility in start and end dates); weekend and holiday work may be required; Fellowship includes University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus housing & campus parking.

- Key Requirements • Currently enrolled in college as an undergraduate student in biology or a related field • Background knowledge in aquatic ecology preferred. • Good working knowledge of computers, frequent use of Excel and Word • Good written and oral communication skills • Ability to work independently with little supervision and as a team. • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. • Responsible for own transportation from campus housing to the Conservation Institute (approx.10-min drive) Interested candidates are asked to apply online through the Aquarium’s career site at https://tnaqua.applicantpro.com/jobs/.
