Two positions available The College of Forestry, Agriculture & Natural Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello is seeking applicants for 2 M.S. Assistantship available beginning January 2, 2024. The assistantship is half time and carries an annual stipend of $18,000 plus tuition and fees. Project: Taxation of forestland is perennially a top concern for forest landowners, according to the national woodland owner’s survey (NWOS). While there is a large body of literature focusing on timber taxation’s effects on decision-making at the stand-level, investigation into those effects at broad landscape scales are scarce. At larger scales, the cumulative effect of multiple landowners’ decisions in response to taxation could generate a misallocation of forest resources, particularly with respect to the provision of ecosystem services like carbon storage and sequestration. As awareness and participation in carbon market programs increases among forest landowners, an examination of how differences in state taxation may influence participation among landowners is needed. We are seeking two highly motivated students to explore this area and provide policy recommendations to policy-makers on needed interventions for incentivizing landowners to store and sequester carbon on forested landscapes.
