- Description
- The University of North Texas (UNT) invites applicants for a PhD assistantships within the Department of Biological Sciences, by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This project will represent a collaborative effort with faculty from UNT’s College of Engineering to design/optimize the use of spent brine from desalination processing for culturing the giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and potentially tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Research will focus on (1) evaluating various water quality parameters that influence growth and survival of our target species and (2) developing a novel sentinel system for the early detection of harmful changes to such parameters by using a combined respirometery/behavioral approach that integrates with machine learning and other aspects of aquaculture engineering. Thus, this project will provide experience for students interested in aquaculture, toxicology and respiratory/behavioral physiology and the opportunity to work closely with faculty in both biology and engineering.

- Anticipated completion of an MS degree in a relevant field prior to joining UNT is preferred for both positions, but is not required (minimum of BS in relevant field required). Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Edward Mager at the following email address: Edward.Mager@unt.edu.
