Description
Ecological and soil response to thinning level and fire frequency in a mixed Red Pine ecosystem. This project is part of an interdisciplinary investigation into the ecological effects of thinning and fire frequency on mixed red pine ecosystems in north central Wisconsin. Emphasis for this assistantship will be on determining the effects of thinning and fire frequency on ecological and soil properties (nutrient cycling and physical, chemical, and biological properties). This project will start in January and last two years. Student responsibilities will involve field data and sample collection and laboratory analysis of soil samples along with data interpretation, statistical analysis, and preparation of manuscripts.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in soil science, forestry, or environmental science (or related field)with a focus on or experience with soils, ability to plan and carry out field measurements, experience with a variety of laboratory techniques, proficiency with writing and use of Microsoft office applications, and demonstrated ability to keep accurate records. Some coursework in biostatistics is of benefit.
