- Description
- AKRF Inc. Environmental, Planning, and Engineering Consultants is seeking a seasonal field technician to conduct grassland bird surveys (with particular focus on the sedge wren) at a proposed development site in the Town of Clay, NY, near Syracuse. The survey will involve morning and evening 5-minute, fixed-radius point-counts at approximately 20 different locations within the site, two days per week, for eight consecutive weeks, beginning around May 15. The morning survey period will be from half an hour before sunrise until no later than 10:30 am, and the evening survey period will be from two hours before sunset until one hour after sunset on the same day. During the point-counts, all birds seen and/or heard within 100 meters will need to be identified to species, counted, and assigned a behavior code at the time of observation (e.g., singing, perching, foraging). Basic habitat data will also need to be collected at each point, and bird data will need to be entered into an Excel spreadsheet and eBird the day of or day after each survey. Strong bird identification skills and attention to detail are required. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated experience identifying northeastern U.S. birds by sight and sound; prior experience with point-counts and/or grassland birds in particular is preferred. Applicants must also be able to walk long distances over rugged terrain and through tall grasses, and tolerate a range of uncomfortable field conditions (e.g., direct sun, heat, humidity, insects). Compensation: Hourly wage of $25-35, DOE. Two nights of hotel accommodations per week will be provided if the selected candidate does not live locally. To Apply: The deadline for applications is April 7, 2023. Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received. To apply, please email as a single PDF (1) a cover letter that includes a clear description of your relevant experience with Northeastern bird identification and surveys; (2) a CV; and (3) contact info for at least two professional references who can attest to your bird ID experience to: Careers@AKRF.com. - Qualifications

Graduates preferred. -Strong northeastern U.S. bird identification skills (by sight and sound). Experience gained solely from a college ornithology course is insufficient. Applicants must demonstrate other sources of field experience (e.g., prior field positions, atlasing efforts, volunteer work, etc.). Prior experience with bird point-counts and grassland birds is a huge plus. -Ability to enter field data into Excel spreadsheets and eBird. -Ability to walk on rugged terrain for several hours, sometimes under adverse (e.g., hot, buggy) conditions. -Current driver’s license and own transportation to the field site (mileage reimbursed).
