STATE OF WYOMING invites applications for the position of: ATTP99-09721-Grassland Bird Technician-Lander SALARY: $14.82 - $14.82 Hourly LOCATION: Lander OPENING DATE: 01/08/19 CLOSING DATE: Continuous DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTIONS: Open Until Filled GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking an experienced avian technician to conduct statewide surveys targeting 4 Species of Greatest Conservation Need- Burrowing Owl, Mountain Plover, Upland Sandpiper, and Long-billed Curlew. This position supports the final year of a 4-year pilot study to establish long-term population monitoring for these high conservation priority species. Human Resource Contact: Kate 307-777-4507 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level. •Work independently for most of the field season to conduct road-based point count and habitat surveys in remote locations using species-specific protocols for the 4 target species. •Record incidental observations of all other Species of Greatest Conservation Need, particularly bird species. •Collect, enter, and proof data. As part of data collection, assist in testing data collection app. •Work independently using maps, ArcGIS, and GPS for statewide survey planning and navigation. •Communicate with landowners and the general public regarding survey access and wildlife management goals and actions. QUALIFICATIONS: PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to those with a high school diploma, plus two years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development or two years of college course work towards a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management, or another closely related field. Must have a valid driver's license. KNOWLEDGE: •Familiarity with Wyoming's grassland ecosystems and bird communities. •Must be able to identify the 4 target species by sight and sound. Preference given to those able to identify all birds of Wyoming by sight and sound. •Experience conducting point count surveys. •Must be able to use maps and a hand-held GPS for navigation, as well as a tablet for data collection. •Must be reliable, have a strong work ethic, great communication skills, and be able to work independently and in remote locations and challenging conditions. •Must have a flexible schedule, and be able to work long and variable hours, particularly based on weather conditions. •Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4WD vehicle. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None - See "Preferences" NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: •Technicians will work independently to navigate to and conduct front-country roadside surveys using GPS, paper maps, tablets and paper datasheets. •Overnight statewide travel is required, with hotel or camping stays for up to 10 days at a time. •The schedule will vary; surveys require early morning and evening work.
