- Description
- WHO WE ARE The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters upon which all life depends. As a science-based organization, we develop innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world’s toughest environmental challenges so that people and nature can thrive. Our work is guided by our values, which include a commitment to diversity and respect for people, communities, and cultures. From a rewarding mission to career development and flexible schedules, there are many reasons to love life #insideTNC. Want to know more? Check out our TNC Talent playlist on YouTube to hear stories from staff or visit Glassdoor. One of TNC’s primary goals is to cultivate an inclusive work environment so that employees around the globe have a sense of belonging and feel that their unique contributions are valued. We know we’ll only achieve our mission by hiring and engaging a diverse staff that reflects the communities in which we work. Recognizing that people bring talent and skills that have been developed outside the scope of a job, we take a holistic approach to recruitment that considers life experience in addition to the professional requirements listed in our postings. Please apply – we’d love to hear from you. To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you’ll join for the mission, and you’ll stay for the people.” WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER The Grassland Protection Coordinator (GPC) works in north-central Nebraska along the eastern edge of the Nebraska Sandhills, primarily in Brown, Holt, Rock and neighboring counties. The South Fork and North Fork of the Elkhorn River headwaters are in the region and a focal area of this program. Its meadows support the state’s largest populations of the federally and state threatened western prairie fringed orchid. It supports many grassland dependent birds that require large intact blocks of grasslands. The area is also habitat for several other federal and state listed species including the small white lady’s slipper orchid, American burying beetle, and whooping crane. Waterfowl and other waterbirds make extensive use of the region’s wetlands. The project area is part of the largest intact grasslands in North America and supply critical grasslands for grazing and hay production. The GPC will oversee a new grassland protection and enhancement program. The GPC will work with TNC staff, local partners and landowners assisting private landowners enrolling in NRCS Farm Bill programs designed to protect and enhance grasslands. GPC may/will also assist writing landowner ranch management plans, grazing plans, building peer to peer learning networks and prescribed fire implementation. GPC will provide administrative, project management and implementation of private and public grant awards as well as other general assistance to program staff working toward the achievement of protection, conservation, and stewardship goals. WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU The Grassland Protection Coordinator will be responsible for increasing technical assistance to accelerate on-the-ground delivery and implementation of NRCS and Farm Bill conservation programs. This coordinator will build on an existing, successful TNC model: Whole Ranch Planning underway in the Sandhills. Whole Ranch Planning is a process of establishing goals to properly manage the resources on the ranch, which includes natural resources, livestock, economics, and people. This new project will focus on expiring CRP contracts within the next five years, core areas of grassland, and opportunities to restore marginal row crops to grasslands. These same NRCS programs assist in the landowners staying on the land, keeping grass in grass, focusing on the economic, environmental, and social aspects of land protection and enhancement. The GPC will work with landowners that desire woody encroachment control and enhanced grasslands. The Grassland Protection Coordinator may manage conservation data, participate in conservation planning, develop project packages, respond to landowner inquiries, and maintain manual project records. May include collecting, assembling, and analysing various types of data, in the field or through document surveys, producing maps using GIS software and assisting in the production of reports. Work may be done in the field (species monitoring) or be based entirely in an office setting, compiling the information collected by others. WHAT YOU'LL BRING Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with Microsoft Office suite. Experience coordinating multiple projects. Experience handling standard business communications. Desired Qualifications Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated 2-4 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to complete tasks independently within assigned time frames. Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number of sources and work independently. Ability to coordinate project information from a number of sources to populate databases, create reports and produce manual files. Experience utilizing databases for data entry and report production preferred. Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability. Ability to plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities. ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION Supervises no staff but may oversee and direct work of office volunteers or interns. Coordinates multiple tasks or projects in a timely manner and with attention to detail. May assist with program budget preparation and monitoring. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Makes day to day decision as delegated by the supervisor. Coordinator will work with partners to identify and contact existing CRP contract holders that are expiring. GPC will target these landowners for assistance in re-enrollment, enrollment in other long-term protection (easements) or other programs that assist in keeping land in grass. Begin Whole Ranch Planning, targeting the acres most at-risk for conversion. Identify marginal row crop acres within floodplains to investigate and advise ranchers who want to return marginal row crops to grass. Assist these landowners with federal programs for restoration. Connect ranchers to Farm Bill programs, providing technical assistance with their applications on EQIP, CSP, ACEP, CRP, ALE, and NSWCP. The project partners will organize two ranch tours/learning events per year. GPC will develop and perform metrics to track success of program (acres enrolled, improved management acres, people affected) AUTO SAFETY POLICY This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program.
