- Primary responsibilities involve grassland bird territory mapping, nest searching, and monitoring of ground-nesting bird communities in the Missouri Coteau mixed-grass prairie. This unique landscape is a part of the prairie pothole region and is home to a high diversity of breeding waterfowl, shorebirds, and passerines. Research will contribute to an understanding of how the interaction of fire and grazing affects avian community composition and nest survival. In addition, technicians will assist with arthropod surveys to assess grassland bird territory quality under various grazing management regimes. Applicants will also have the opportunity to assist with prescribed burns and vegetation sampling. Start and end dates are flexible
- Qualifications
- Successful applicants should have prior experience with bird identification. Previous experience with vegetation monitoring is preferred. Nest dragging can be an intensive process, and applicants must be able to hike ~8 miles a day in uneven terrain. Applicants must be self-motivated and able to work individually and as a team. Organizational skills and attention to detail is essential. Summer temperatures can range from just above freezing to over 90° F, so applicants must be comfortable working in a wide range of environmental conditions.
