Greater Prairie-Chicken Technician-Oklahoma
Oklahoma State University
Osage County, Oklahoma
Last Date to Apply
Description: One Technician is needed to assist with a Greater Prairie-Chicken (GRPC) research project in Osage County, Oklahoma. The objectives of this study are to evaluate thermal ecology and dietary needs of GRPC broods in a landscape managed with prescribed fire and grazing. Research will take place on private property as well as The Nature Conservancy’s Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in Osage County. The position will last from April 2- early September (end dates can be flexible). During the first half of the season technicians are expected to assist with trapping, handling, and deploying GPS transmitters to GRPC. During the second half of the season technicians will assist with nest searching, monitoring broods with UHF telemetry, and the collection of vegetation data, thermal data, and invertebrate samples. Other duties include but are not limited to: equipment maintenance, data entry, and sorting invertebrate samples.
Our work schedule will be extremely variable and will change as needed. Expect many early mornings, and likely working on weekends especially during the trapping season. Workdays will start before sunrise through-out most of the season. Applicants should be willing and capable of maintaining this schedule for the entire season with a positive attitude. Other challenges associated with working in grasslands include extremely variable weather (ranging from very cold to possibly extreme heat), bugs, and wildlife (Bison at the preserve).
Applicants must work well in a team and be able to take directions and work independently. Shared housing will be provided at the preserve. Housing will be somewhat remote as the closest big town is over 40 minutes from the preserve and internet and phone reception is limited.
Though this position could be very challenging it offers a unique opportunity to live and work in some of the best preserved tallgrass prairie left in the United States with a species of conservation concern.
Applications will be reviewed as they are received and all qualified applicants will be interviewed until the position is filled. We are hoping to fill this position as soon as possible so please apply early if you are interested.
Qualifications: The majority of this research will take place on private lands, so the ability to work well with and respect private landowners and their property is a must. Preference will be given to applicants that demonstrate a willingness to learn and who are personable. Experience trapping and handling gamebirds, vegetation sampling, data entry, and driving ATVs would be helpful but not necessary. Applicants must be fit and able to walk long distances (potentially several miles) over rough terrain in low light conditions. Valid driver’s license required.
To apply send a cover letter, resume/cv, and three references as a single PDF document to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include “last name GRPC tech” in subject line. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Interviews will be scheduled as suitable candidates apply so please apply early. Feel free to contact me with any questions about the position at the above email.
