We are taking applications for assistant technician positions for 15 May–27 August of 2023, assisting with hair snagging for grizzly bears in southwest Montana. Employment is by University of Montana but supervised by US Fish and Wildlife Service. Primary tasks will include: assist the lead technician in set-up, checking, and collecting hair from rub trees for DNA analysis, set-up and maintenance of barb wire corral hair collection sites (DNA) and remote cameras, and other duties as assigned. Applicant must expect and be willing to hike, work, and camp in grizzly bear habitat. This position will require the employee to be capable of driving pick-up trucks on remote roads. Additional tasks may include minor equipment maintenance and data entry. Applicant must write legibly and keep accurate records for biological data collection, organize collected samples, and perform data entry. Will involve several instances of overnight camping.
Applicant must be in good physical condition with ability to hike 5–10 miles per day for several consecutive days often in poor weather conditions and carry a 20–30-pound backpack in rugged terrain. Applicant must have ability to work with others and will work in a team with the lead technician. Valid state driver’s license required. License must be presented to supervisor for inspection on first day of work. Applicant must be experienced and proficient at operating a four-wheel drive truck on gravel and dirt roads. The following are work experiences that are preferred but not required. Performing fieldwork in grizzly bear habitat; driving on gravel or dirt logging roads; operation of 2-way radio communications, use of a satellite communication device (INREACH), trail camera experience, set-up and collection of hair at corral sites, use of bear spray, and operation of GPS. Position is 15 May–27 August 2022. Position will receive $14/ hour plus $20 per diem each day worked. Work schedule is typically 4, 10-hour days on, 3 days off, but may vary. Housing may be provided for some positions. Please state in your application if you have housing in Missoula. Successful applicant required to provide their own transportation to duty station, where a government vehicle will be used for work related transportation.
