- TWO (2) OPENINGS // FULL-TIME/PERMANENT HABITAT ENGINEERS ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER 3 (IN-TRAINING OPTION) Habitat Program -One (1) Position – Region 1 – Spokane Valley, Washington – Spokane County -One (1) Position – Region 3 – Yakima, Washington – Yakima County **Spokane Valley & Yakima Washington are the current duty stations, however, depending on the successful candidates, other duty stations may be considered. Represent WDFW as a registered Professional Engineer and provide/approve final engineering designs and decisions on an assortment of fish passage, fish screening, fish habitat restoration, and water crossing structure projects! Applicants may be hired at the EE2 or EE3 level. If hired as an Environmental Engineer 2, you will embark on a 24-month training plan. Once you have successfully completed the In-Training program, you’ll advance to an Environmental Engineer 3. Bauer With that in mind, -Picture yourself providing professional engineering technical assistance to Agency staff and individuals/groups outside the Agency involved in all aspects of aquatic habitat restoration work of varying scope and scale! -In this dynamic role, you will prepare professional engineering designs and permit documents for fish passage (fish ladders, fishways roughened channels, grade control weirs, etc.) erosion control, bank protection, gravity and pump fish screening for various fish species and life history stages, and habitat restoration projects. -You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, represent WDFW on large, complex passage and screening projects with a variety of local, state, and federal stakeholders in the Yakima Basin Integrated Plan, Yakima Tributary Access and Habitat Program, and other venues to ensure protection of fish life. -We are seeking candidates with demonstrated values matching those of WDFW: Accountability, Service, Professionalism, Integrity, Respect, and Empathy (ASPIRE). DUTIES Our Habitat Engineers, Technical Assistance: -Specializes in reviews, negotiations, and recommendations for approval or disapproval of plans, proposals, and designs for fish passage and screening project proposals, water crossing project proposals, bank protection/erosion control, fish habitat enhancement and restoration, flood hazard reduction, and mitigation for various instream projects submitted as part of the agency regulatory and technical assistance functions. -Prepares professional engineering designs and permit documents for fish passage (fish ladders, fishways roughened channels, grade control weirs, etc.) erosion control, bank protection, gravity and pump fish screening for various fish species and life history stages, and habitat restoration projects. Serves as a liaison with other agency personnel, state and federal agencies, and local governments to resolve complex engineering issues. -Provides technical assistance for designs of proposals for work affecting fish and wildlife habitats. Project Design: -Combines environmental engineering expertise, biology, and project management skills and abilities to develop complex projects for habitat restoration, fish passage, and bank protection projects under the supervision of an assigned engineer. -Performs design and calculations for fish passage analysis, geomorphology, stream hydrology, open channel flow and backwater hydraulics, placement of wood in streams, hydraulics, structural analysis, and sediment transport. -Identifies and evaluates alternatives and provides project oversight during development and construction. Training and Documents: -Researches, writes, and participates in development of aquatic habitat guidelines for the design of water crossings, fish passage, bank protection, stream restoration, screening and habitat restoration, flood hazard management, and other instream activities and techniques.? WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: -Work is performed in an office and outdoor environment - approximately 70% office work and 30% field work. -Office work requires using computers, answering phones, reviewing designs, writing comments, developing designs and guidance documents – telework/remote options may be available. -Field work includes hiking and wading streams and walking over rough terrain for short distances (less than a mile) regularly and occasionally for long distances (several miles) in rough weather conditions, driving a vehicle to conduct field review of project sites, working in remote forested and aquatic environments, conducting fish surveys and other related tasks. These activities can consist of 8 to 10 hour days, for several days in a row. Schedule: -40 hours per week, typically on weekdays, specific schedule is negotiable. -Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules. Travel Requirements: -Travel throughout the state to evaluate site conditions and attend meetings is required – most travel occurs within the coverage area. -Periods of overnight travel will be required, and work hours may exceed the standard 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. workday. Tools and Equipment: -Phones, computers, surveying equipment, pressure transducers, and flow meters. GPS, survey equipment, clinometer, and digital camera. Customer Interactions: -Interaction with tribes, federal, state, and local governments, politicians, engineers, biologists, scientists, restoration groups and the public are frequently required.

- Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To enter at the Environmental Engineer 2 in-training to the Environmental Engineer 3 level: (Note: After successful completion of a twenty-four (24) month in-training period as an Environmental Engineer 2, the incumbent will advance to an Environmental Engineer 3). A Master's degree with major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or a related field AND One (1) year of experience in environmental engineering. OR An Engineer-In-Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields: sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental, chemical, mechanical or a related field AND Two (2) years of environmental engineering experience. To be considered for the Environmental Engineer 3: Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington as required by RCW 18.43. Please Note: -Requirements for professional registration as an engineer in the state of Washington are eight (8) years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college-level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen (16) hours of professional licensing exams. -Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve professional registration as an engineer in the state of Washington within six (6) months of appointment to this class. Certifications/Licenses: -A Valid Driver’s License. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: -A Master's degree with major study in one (1) of the following engineering fields: water resources, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or a related field. AND -Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington. AND -Two (2) years of experience in environmental engineering. OR -An Engineer-In-Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one (1) of the following engineering fields: civil, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, or a related field. AND -Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND -Three (3) years of experience in environmental engineering. **Please Note: A Ph.D. in one (1) of the above engineering fields may substitute for two (2) years of the environmental engineering experience.
