This position will provide oversight, technical assistance, expertise, and guide wildlife habitat management primarily on State Game Production Areas in the central and northern portion of Region 2, which includes the following counties: Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Sully, Potter, Walworth, Campbell, Corson, Dewey, and Stanley. The incumbent will supervise and provide work direction to Habitat Resource Biologists, Habitat Conservation Foremen, Habitat Conservation Technicians, as well as seasonal and intern staff at the Fort Pierre and Mobridge District Offices. A valid driver license is required and a CDL will be required within 30 days of hire date. The incumbent will work in a typical office environment and field working conditions. Travel throughout central and northern portion of Region 2 Wildlife Division. Occasional overnight stays maybe required. Successful applicant will also be required to complete a certified ATV safety course, an online UTV safety course, obtain a South Dakota Department of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, and Fire Fighter Type 2 certification. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Education and experience in wildlife habitat management is preferred. Knowledge of: land management techniques and equipment used in the development of habitat for wildlife. Skill to: work effectively with agency staff, diverse members of the public, conservation organizations, and landowners in managing wildlife habitat; formulate Game Production Area Habitat Management Plans; operate computers and various GIS/GPS technologies; report Game Production Area Management Plan accomplishments into an electronic database (Wildlife Inventory Land Management Application). Ability to: lift heavy loads occasionally; work long hours, and work outside during inclement weather; communicate effectively, and be able to work alone or as part of a team; oversee hiring and training of subordinate staff to ensure effective delivery of habitat management practices, and ensure coaching is provided to all permanent and seasonal staff within the habitat section of Region 3; supervise and provide oversight, work direction, technical assistance and expertise to Resource Biologists, Conservation Foremen and Conservation Technicians relating to habitat management to ensure goals and objectives of the Division are carried out; provide recommendations and technical assistance to Regional Supervisor, Regional Terrestrial Resource Supervisor and Conservation Officers on management and delivery of habitat programs; promote the development of regional staff knowledge, ability and skills to enhance their effectiveness and expertise in delivering habitat programs; set and enforce work standards, performance and conduct for assigned subordinate regional staff; recommend annual budget, supply, equipment, capital asset and capital development needs; draft construction contracts for capital development projects, and service contracts for for annual weed control and other habitat related contracts; review equipment specifications and initiate purchases or requisitions of equipment and supply items used by regional staff, including tractors, ATVs, UTVs, trailers, GIS equipment and other specialized equipment used in the Habitat Program; direct, coordinate, plan, schedule and provide oversight on the implementation of regional Game Production Area habitat management plans, prescribed fire plans, land acquisition proposals, capital development projects, research and other matters related to the habitat program; ensure necessary maintenance and care is accomplished on all equipment used within the habitat program; coordinate and complete monthly and annual reports, and annual and periodic leases for grazing, haying and cropping; answer inquiries regarding habitat matters and Game Production Area policies from the public and regional staff.
