Duties and Responsibilities: This position will foster the mutual conservation objectives of Pheasants Forever, Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Bureau of Land Management, and other resource agencies to develop and deliver pheasant and riparian habitat initiatives. The Habitat Specialist will be enhancing habitat on public lands, specifically food plots, nesting and brood cover area, shelterbelt plantings and other habitat enhancement projects. Onsite work will include: equipment transport, site preparation, seed mixing & planting, mechanical & chemical weed control, tillage and mowing practices, irrigation, riparian vegetation management, and assist with controlled burning along with other farming practices. Flood and center pivot irrigation practices account for a large portion of the annual work schedule. A willingness to work long hours when needed. Offsite duties may include: project solicitation, detailed record keeping, accomplishment reporting, time and budget management, and assisting biologist with annual work & habitat management planning. Pheasants Forever organizational training will be provided by PF Regional Wildlife Biologist and Habitat Forever National Staff.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree in Wildlife Management, Biological Sciences or Agriculture is a benefit but is not required for these positions. PF is looking for a motivated individual with the ability to work long hours in the field during peak seasons of the year. Practical experience in the operation and repair of equipment including: tractors, tillage equipment, grass drills, mowers, ATV’s, trucks, and gooseneck trailer is very important. Candidate must show experience that includes practical knowledge of establishment, maintenance, and the long term management of grasslands, shrubs and cereal crops. Understanding the process and techniques of crop field irrigation, maintenance of irrigation equipment is very important. Knowledge, experience, and training in prescribed burning helpful. Applicant must be an innovative and resourceful self-starter with excellent communication skills and be able to work with minimal supervision. Have or ability to acquire CDL Operators License and Herbicide Applicators License. This is a demanding but rewarding job, the right individual can gain incredible experience working with landowners, agencies, and volunteers building conservation projects and wildlife habitat.
