Description
Help protect Houston’s nature on the Houston Environmental Action Team Crew! The Texas Conservation Corps’ Houston Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is a full-time AmeriCorps opportunity for young adults local to the Houston area that focuses on local urban conservation and restoration projects. This crew works locally on a regular schedule, Monday- Friday. Typical projects include habitat restoration, trail construction and maintenance, park development and clean-up, and environmentally sustainable landscaping. As a HEAT Crew Member, you will gain hands-on conservation experience, serve the local community, and serve on a crew of 6-10 other young adults protecting and improving Houston’s environment. We highly encourage you to apply if you are LGBTQ+, experiencing homelessness, or are involved with the criminal justice system. Term Dates: 01/31/2022 - 07/01/2022 Responsibilities -Construct & maintain trails -Erosion control -Construction & upkeep of public land features -Remove invasive plant species -Wildland fuel reduction -Habitat restoration projects -Maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment Benefits -$1,550 per month stipend -AmeriCorps Education Award -Non-private student loan deferment -First Aid & CPR certification -Technical & soft skills training -Financial assistance to purchase equipment -Health insurance -Opportunity to network with partnering agencies such as Houston Parks Board
Qualifications
-High school diploma or GED -Between the ages of 18-28 -US Citizenship or lawful permanent US Resident -Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check -Ability to hike 1-10 miles per day in rugged terrain, while carrying tools -Ability to work outdoors in all weather types while doing hard, often repetitive, labor with hand & power tools -Ability to work with a diverse group of people -Commitment to complete the entire term of service
