- Position duration 4/15/23 – 7/29/23 (start and end date is somewhat flexible) One intern is needed to assist in conducting avian point counts, mist netting operations for Cerulean Warblers, and habitat measurements. In addition to the above duties, interns will assist a graduate student with data entry. This data collection is in support of a graduate student’s project and long-term research in conjunction with state and federal agencies. Study areas are in remote areas of the Sipsey Wilderness and Black Warrior Wildlife Management Area located in the Bankhead National Forest, Alabama and are largely without cell service. This position requires long hours spent hiking, backpacking, and primitive camping. Candidates must be comfortable with exposure to inclement weather, biting and stinging insects, and navigating over rough, uneven terrain. This position requires physically demanding work at varying times of day, including pre-dawn start times and a non-traditional work week. Some evening work may also be necessary. Housing is provided in the form of project camp trailers. Camping will be required to complete data collection. Must have a valid US driver's license. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to spend long days in the field. Ability to work with others. Ability to walk long distances and carry 30+ pounds of gear. Knowledge of and use of MS Office. Ability to pay attention to detail.

- Qualifications: Positive attitude, a good sense of humor Preferred qualifications: (a) knowledge of point count protocols and ability to identify birds of Northern Alabama by sight and sound, (b) experience with mist netting techniques, (c) interest in avian ecology, (d) willingness to work in remote settings, (e) camping and backpacking skills, (f) BS in Wildlife or related field.
