Position Status: Temporary Seasonal Labor, not to exceed 1,000 hours (25 weeks) within a one-year period.
Job Description: The selected candidate(s) will serve as a member of a resource stewardship/Rx Fire crew operating in Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park. The selected candidates will have the opportunity to be trained in and assist with a variety of natural resource stewardship techniques including chainsaw use, glade restoration, woodland restoration, prescribed fire, fireline construction, school programs, managed deer hunt & Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) sampling, and invasive plant control.
Typical Tasks: Preparing fireline through clearing woody debris and leaf litter with chainsaws and backpack blowers – felling and girdling hardwood trees – assisting with wildlife surveys - felling and burning eastern red cedar – assisting with prescribed fire operations –mitigating invasive plants – interacting with members of the public.
Start date is negotiable, depending on outcome of background check.
Interest in the realm of natural resource management (Botany, Ecology, Wildlife, Forestry, etc.). Ability to: Physically and safely operate power equipment including chainsaws, brush saws, backpack blowers and ATV/UTV’s - Must possess valid driver’s license - Must be willing to accept occasional overnight travel in remote localities - Endure challenging field conditions including hot/cold temperatures, rain, and snow - Demonstrate a professional attitude and a passion for natural resource stewardship work.
