- Description
- The Invasive Weeds Crew Member will work with the Plants Stewardship Director to combat invasive species, restore native plant populations and monitor rare plant populations in the tri-canyons: Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, and Millcreek Canyon. This individual will report directly to the Plants Stewardship Director. The Invasive Weeds Crew Member will be able to navigate demanding physical work in often adverse conditions with a positive attitude. This position requires a combination of invasive species identifying and hiking ability as well as a proven ability to work with volunteers and organizational partners. This position will be expected to navigate an often-changing schedule and dynamic work environment. This position will be expected to work with and lead volunteers on various projects. This position requires a team-first attitude, a willingness to learn and lead, flexibility with various work projects and conditions, and an interest and willingness to further the educational and outreach goals of Cottonwood Canyons Foundation. This position may require employees to work with partner groups as well as fellow CCF departments in the completion of large-scale projects not related to invasive species. For the 2023 season, this could include the USFS Trails Master Plan project, CCF education department events, and CCF Naturalist program participation.

- REQUIRED SKILLS AND BACKGROUND: -Invasive weeds experience or similar job experience that demonstrates an ability to learn needed skills. -Proven ability and willingness to work with volunteers. -Outdoor leadership skills. -Strong communication skills. -Strong interpersonal skills. -Knowledge of the Cottonwood Canyons area through recreational use is preferred. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: -A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Botany or other related fields, is preferred. Alternatively, specific course work related to the fields of Ecology, Botany or Natural Resources is also relevant. -Basic plant biology. -First Aid / CPR certification (will provide training). -Occasional herbicide application (certification provided). -Willingness and ability to work in a dynamic environment, and in a team setting. -Willingness and ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and challenging environments. -Willingness and ability to perform daily tasks relating to invasive weeds mitigation, including but not limited to hiking, walking or standing for 8 or more hours, repetitive digging out or pulling weeds, scouting and occasional tasks relating to other CCF program needs. -Enthusiasm for working with volunteers and the general public. -Mature and positive attitude. Professionalism and good communication skills. -Able to work May-October, 40 hours/week. -Ability to work legally in the United States. -Able to pass a background check and drug screening as requested. -Awareness with GPS surveying equipment. -Experience in using dichotomous botanical keys or related field guides. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: -Work is performed generally outdoors. Work will be performed during challenging weather conditions, requiring physical labor including hiking, walking, digging, operating tools, lifting, bending, and reaching. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to stay standing or actively walking and hiking on uneven trails and off trail terrain. Ability to lift and carry objects of at least 40 pounds. Ability to lift, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, push and other strenuous activities. SCHEDULE: -40 hours per week, typically Tuesday through Saturday, with Sundays and Mondays generally off. -7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. -Some flexibility required with occasional Sunday, Monday, or variable hours outside the regular schedule. -Overtime will not be permitted unless expressly approved by the Plants Stewardship Director. RESPONSIBILITIES: -Work under the direction of the Plants Stewardship Director on regular invasive weeds mitigation tasks in the tri-canyons. -Follow safety management plans and practices throughout the year. -Assist in the coordination of large volunteer projects throughout the year -Help supervise diverse volunteer groups on service project days. -Report tool and equipment needs to the Plants Stewardship Director -Occasional program support for events such as the Wasatch Wildflower Festival or Kid’s Day at Silver Lake and others as assigned. -Communicate professionally with volunteers, crew members and partnering entities. -Help maintain a cache of shovels and other tools, as necessary. -Represent Cottonwood Canyons Foundation in a positive manner by educating volunteers on invasive weed issues and a stewardship ethic.
