Project description: Drs. Kevin Roe and Michael Weber are seeking a M.S. student to develop and execute a research project to estimate the impact of experimental outflows from dams on the distribution, recruitment, and survival of freshwater mussels. Duties and responsibilities: Fieldwork and laboratory work will include managing technicians, conducting quantitative surveys for freshwater mussels and monitoring the movement of tagged mussels on multiple occasions throughout the year. Lab work will include determining the age structure of selected freshwater mussel species by thin sectioning shells from multiple populations. The student will have freedom to develop research questions within the scope of the project but is expected to provide information regarding the response of freshwater mussels to the operational activities identified in the Des Moines River Monitoring and Adaptive Management Plan. The student will enroll Spring 2022 and field work will be conducted in 2022 and 2023. Qualifications: B.S. in Wildlife Sciences, Biology, Ecology, or a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0. The ideal candidate is a respectful and inclusive team member, has interest in developing quantitative skills, and works well both independently and on a team. Preference will be given to candidates with experience identifying freshwater mussels, conducting/coordinating fieldwork, and managing a field crew. Previous experience with data management, statistical analysis, R programming, and written or oral presentation of scientific results is helpful but not required. GRE scores are not required. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
