Description
JOB PURPOSE: The Prion Lab at the National Wildlife Health Center will be hiring a student contractor to serve as a Laboratory Researcher to perform laboratory experiments related to chronic wasting disease prion detection. This is a full-time position for 1 year. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: A laboratory researcher with a background in basic research laboratory skills and techniques is needed to assist in isolating infectious prions from environmental and biological samples for analysis by real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) assays. The successful candidate will perform protein expression and purification methods, prion extraction methods on samples such as blood, skin, soil and feces, and RT-QuIC assays. The candidate will also work closely with postdoctoral researchers and technicians to analyze data to better understand the diagnostic potential of these biological and environmental matrices. The candidate may work with university, state, federal, and NGO officials in this position. SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: • Protein extraction and purification from various samples. • Perform and run plated laboratory assays. • Preparation of laboratory reagents and solutions. • Maintaining inventory and stocking supplies. • General laboratory maintenance such as dishwashing and autoclaving labware. • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • A background in basic laboratory skills such as pipetting, reagent preparation, volume calculations, etc. • Ability to follow directions for the successful completion of tasks. • Must be reliable and have a positive and professional attitude. • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and can stand and move around for long periods of time. • Strong organizational skills and ability to problem solve. • Effective time management skills and ability to multi-task. • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a recent graduate with not more than 1 year passing receiving a Bachelor’s degree, or currently pursuing their Bachelor’s degree. Education: The successful candidate will have a B.S. in biology, animal science, microbiology, wildlife ecology or a closely related field.
