Join our Saint Croix Watershed Research Station team as a Laboratory Technician I who conducts routine and non-routine laboratory analyses on sediment and water samples while meeting quality control standards, performs lab maintenance, equipment calibration, provides assistance with fieldwork, and contributes to the record-keeping for environmental research projects that advance our collective knowledge.
This position is located at St. Croix Watershed Research Station, located in the city of Marine on St. Croix, MN – 30 miles north of the Twin Cities.
Open lab environment requiring ability to stand for long periods, to work at lab bench heights, plus standard office setting. Fieldwork settings require physical strength and stamina to conduct field sampling in difficult terrain and under adverse weather conditions. Some field sampling takes place aboard boats.
Temporarily remote work from home required as necessary, to be assessed every 3 months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to perform basic laboratory analyses using the appropriate technical equipment and instruments (microbalance, discrete analyzer, carbon analyzer, water filtration system, pipettes, etc.).
Prepare chemical reagents, standards and solutions used for various laboratory analyses, as stated in SOP/method.
Assist laboratory staff in other day-to-day tasks, including organizing sample storage and data flow, cleaning labware, and assisting scientists in fieldwork preparation.
Assist research staff in the collection of water and sediment samples (includes travel, which requires overnight stays).
Represent the St. Croix Watershed Research Station (SCWRS) and Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) in outreach efforts.
Practice safe work habits, including complying with safety, health and environmental rules and regulation.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Hiring Pay Range: $15.25 USD or more per hour / Depending on Qualifications.

Demonstrated ability in standard office software (Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel).
Proven ability to do basic dilution and concentration calculations.
Strong attention to details.
Ability to work both independently and on a team.
Post-secondary education in the biological or physical sciences is strongly preferred, equivalent professional training will be considered.
Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
