Please visit our website at for further information about the Department of Health.  The South Dakota Public Health Laboratory is recruiting a Laboratory Technician in its Support Services Division which supports medical microbiology, environmental chemistry, and forensic chemistry testing. The position is being advertised as part-time or full-time but morning work from 7 A.M. to 12 P.M. is required. A relevant background in biology and/or chemistry is recommended but on-the-job training is also available. Incumbent will work in a laboratory environment that includes noise and heat from equipment, and potentially strong odors. The incumbent will work directly with chemicals including acids, bases, organic solvents, and flammables. The incumbent will also handle infectious waste. The incumbent must be able to stand much of the work day and must be able to lift packages up to 50 pounds.   NCRC: If you possess a National Career Readiness Certificate, please submit the certificate with your application. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: An associates degree with coursework in biology and/or chemisty is preferred. Applicants with experience in commercial food or restaurant industries are also welcome to apply. Applicants with applicable work experience but without relevant college coursework or degree will be considered. Knowledge of: -scientific measurement of mass and volume, sterile technique, microbiological media, and chemical, biological, and occupational safety. Skill to: -purchase and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies; -sort and open packages containing environmental and biological samples; -observe all aspects of chemical, biological, and occupational safety; -operate commercial dishwashers, ovens, and autoclaves (steam sterilizers); -operate scales and balances; -make complex microbiological media and dispense media into appropriate vessels (tubes, plates, and bottles) for later use. Ability to: -support the diverse needs of the Medical Microbiology, Environmental Chemistry, and Forensic Chemistry Sections at the state public health laboratory; -establish priorities and manage time to ensure daily tasks are performed in a timely manner; -work cooperatively with Support Services staff, scientists, and laboratory leadership to meet time-based and project-based goals.
