- Conservation Begins Here. The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire students for the programs. Training Dates: 5/22/23-5/26/23 (Indian,AK), +1 more training week tbd (paid mandatory training) Program Dates: 6/14/23-7/4/23 (Indian,AK and Port Alsworth,AK) Location (City and State): Port Alsworth, AK Primary Responsibilities: SCA Alaska High School Crews Work with Federal partners across Alaska. This team will work in Southwest Alaska with Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. This team will consist primarily of youth from the Bristol Bay Native Corporation shareholders and their descendants. The team consisting of 6-8 youth members and 2 leaders will live and work together for 2 weeks. Specific projects may include creating/maintaining trail tread and cutting/removing brush from the trail corridor. The team will camp for the duration of the program and eat meals together. They will learn outdoor living skills, trail work skills, and lifelong skills to take with them after the program. The team will work with each other to resolve conflicts and build relationships. While working with the National Park Service, they will be able to network with folks in careers in natural resources. The crew will have the opportunity to get a taste for these different career paths and see if it is something for them. The members will be flown in and out from their regional villages via Pen Air. This crew will start in Port Alsworth, AK. The crew will work on Joe Thompsons Alpine trail on the northern side of Lake Clark. NPS will provide transportation from Port Alsworth to the site via boat. Specifically, the Crew Leader will: Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, health checks, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff Working with SCA Alaska Program Coordinator or Program Manager to successfully implement the position program
- Qualifications
- leader Qualifications: Experience working with youth or young adults (especially youth 15 19 years old), teaching or environmental education a plus Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred i.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more Wilderness First Responder or WFA (At least 1 leader must have WFR) Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: Must be a minimum of 21 years of age Must have the ability to legally work in the US Must have a valid drivers license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards Must be able to meet SCAs criminal background check standards Leader Benefits and Compensation: $800 weekly stipend $1300 travel stipend Leaders will have access to SCAs Alaska cache for pre/post program operations. The crew will have a yurt in Port Alsworth prior to entering and exiting the field. While in the field the team will be camping in tents with the possibility of cabin for food storage and cooking. Leader will go through SCAs Conservation Work Skills course to successfully gain trail building/maintenance knowledge and experience. They will go through one additional week of policy, risk management, and soft skills training.
