Description
Alaska BioMap is seeking an independent contractor to provide technical and analytical support to the National Park Service's Landscape Architecture and GIS team within the Planning Division of the Denver Service Center (DSC). The main responsibilities of the NPS DSC Planning Division are to provide parks and the service with a wide range of planning products (e.g., general management plans, wilderness plans, and special resource studies) and a variety of graphic materials that support these planning efforts. The Division's team of approximately 60 professionals works with parks and regional staff to meet the unique needs of every location in the national park system. The incumbent needs sufficient experience to function independently with minimal technical support while 1) accomplishing project priorities and meeting deadlines in consultation with planning division and branch staff, 2) planning and carrying out assignments, and 3) employing initiative, originality, and flexibility in the preparation of documents/products. Incumbents will work on both large and small projects as workloads dictate. Qualifications
Mandatory Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience, in landscape architecture, geographic information systems (GIS), or related fields •Strong written and verbal communication skills •Strong collaboration skills and experience working with teams •Positive attitude and a willingness to learn •Thorough knowledge of personal computer systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite Preferred Qualifications: •Working knowledge of planning products, principles, concepts, methodologies, rules, and regulations •Ability to apply landscape architectural principles, methods, and techniques to support an array of planning projects including development concept plans, site plans, accessibility plans, park management zoning, resource and facility management plans, and strategic plans •Ability to provide support in the study, investigation, and resolution of landscape architectural challenges, methods, and techniques in the planning, design, construction, or improvement of park landscapes and facilities •Ability to provide advice on areas such as technical assistance on accessibility, site design, facility design, and potential construction impacts •Ability to research, evaluate, and explain agency policies, procedures, and technical requirements for landscape architecture and accessibility activities •Ability to coordinate and take direction from others in formulating strategies to meet needs •Ability to resolve basic to intermediate planning issues utilizing CAD and/or GIS and other technologies •Experience in evaluating potential implications to natural resources and park and recreation infrastructure/facilities •Proficiency in Microsoft Project and SharePoint Online •At least one year of work experience related directly to the position •An interest in expanding the principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) through the support of building a culture that embraces awareness and learning •An interest in incorporating JEDI principles into NPS planning products General Performance Requirements: •Assist with internal and public scoping •Gather and synthesize background materials for planning projects •Analyze technical information to support planning and compliance processes, ranging from a wide range of data and information including analysis of natural and cultural resources, land uses, demographics, outdoor recreation trends, and socioeconomic factors •Write sections of planning documents like strategic plans, environmental assessments (EAs),environmental impact statements (EISs), etc. • Prepare for project-related virtual meetings and hybrid workshops by handling logistics, scheduling, and preparation of agendas/minutes/materials • Assist with notetaking, project file organization, and preparation of project decision files • Transcribe flip chart notes from meetings and workshops • Code, analyze, and prepare summaries of public comments • Prepare materials and support logistics for public meetings • Assist with database and spreadsheet management • Assist with project management related tasks, which could include contributing to the development of scope, schedule, and budget • Assist with product development and improvement of processes • Perform filing/administrative record-keeping • Organize planning libraries on network drives and SharePoint sites • Work independently or with minimal technical support Develop specific ideas on the organization and approach of a task in consultation with the project manager and work cooperatively with team members • Complete products satisfactorily and on time. Completed work may be reviewed by project and branch managers for content and effectiveness in meeting overall work objectives
