About the research: Do you like spending your time outside in the forest digging around in the dirt? Is your ideal day one that involves a warm Nalgene of water, a backpack full of gear, and the heat and humidity of an Ozark summer? Do you have a favorite field bandana or a favorite field Sharpie? If so, you might be a good fit for the Verble Lab’s open position in working on terrestrial leaf litter ecology. We’re looking for a field biologist to examine physical and ecological constraints on leaf litter decomposition in Ozark deciduous leaf litter systems starting in Fall 2022. About the funding: This position is funded with a graduate teaching assistantship and pays from $18,000 to $25,000 per year (depending on the availability of summer funding) and also includes a 100% tuition waiver. The student is expected to teach 1-2 sections of a laboratory course in conjunction with a faculty mentor each semester. About the place: Missouri University of Science and Technology is located in Rolla, Missouri, a field biologist’s paradise, situated right next to the Mark Twain National Forest, several Missouri Department of Conservation properties, and approximately 20 minutes from the university’s Ozark Research Field Station. The university offers a uniquely science and technology focused perspective and has strengths in engineering, so students have opportunities to connect their biological research to technology and application in novel ways. Additionally, within the campus’s environmental science program, opportunities to gain experience with eDNA, geospatial and remote sensing technology, atmospheric aerosols, toxicology, and insects are available. More here: https://futurestudents.mst.edu About us: My lab is a place where it is okay to make a mistake, where the office door is almost always open and there’s an extra coffee cup if you forgot yours. We value a lab culture of cooperation over competition, of inclusivity, and lifelong connections. We strongly believe in work-life balance and respecting that you have identities outside of your career. We not only believe in a diverse workplace, but actively work to promote diverse, equitable and inclusive spaces. We might be a little odd, but we like to think it’s the good kind of odd. Most importantly, we’re willing to provide our references (a list of former and current students for you to talk with), so you don’t just have to take our word on it. How to apply: If you’re interested, send me an e-mail with your CV and transcripts (it doesn’t have to be the official ones). In the e-mail, introduce yourself, tell me why you want to come work with me, what questions you have, and what the best way to get in contact with you is. Also, give me the name and phone number of someone who can tell me more about you.
