This position is responsible for providing guidance on legal compliance matters to the executive staff and employees of the Department of Wildlife Resources, with a primary emphasis on the agency’s Division of Law Enforcement. Provides legal research and maintain current knowledge of legal developments relevant to the agency and the Division of Law Enforcement. Provides this information to employees through instructing in a variety of formats, prepares policy updates for DWR employees, assists with compliance matters appropriate to be handled at the agency level, and serve as a liaison to the Attorney General’s Office on matters requiring that Office’s assistance.
Minimum Qualifications Working and demonstrated knowledge of state and federal judicial systems. Working and demonstrated knowledge of the state legislative and executive branches of government; of agency policies and procedures, including but not limited to, wildlife laws and regulations, human resources rules and regulations, fair labor standards, Standards of Conduct, with the related grievance procedure; and of case law relevant to the agency and law enforcement operations. Demonstrated ability to analyze information, prepare reports; communicate effectively orally and in writing. Progressively responsible and results oriented experience in the justice system as a practicing attorney. Some experience working on legal issues in law enforcement, criminal law and procedure, natural resources, or state government (preferably multiple of these, but at least one) High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited law school. Active or Associate licensure by the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners, in good standing Preferred Qualifications Substantial experience in the areas of criminal law and procedure, natural resources law, legal aspects of law enforcement agency administration, or legal aspects of state agency administration. Special Requirements This position will require the completion of an annual Statement of Economic Interest disclosure form in accordance to The State and Local Government Conflict of Interest Act §§ 2.2-3114, 2.2-3115, or 2.2-3116.
